Last week I posted a video in which I talked about the component parts of a bow drill set, including a number of different materials that you could use for each of those parts.
In this video I show you how to make a bow drill set from materials that I found in the woods. I’ve used sycamore for the hearth board and 2 spindles, hazel for the bow and a piece of hornbeam for the bearing block. It actually took me a little longer to find the materials than it did to make the set with sourcing the sycamore taking around 30 minutes. The hazel and hornbeam were easy to find. If you have any questions on how to make a bow drill set, let me know and I’ll do my best to answer them.
We teach bow drilling on the IOL Bushcraft Competency Course. You can see loads of photos from this course, as well as all of our other courses, on our Facebook page.
