What’s it about?
Based at our ancient woodland camp in Kent, our 1 day spoon carving course has been put together for anyone who’d like to understand how to use simple tools to create beautiful items from greenwood.
Whilst we’re certain that you’ll leave us with a great hand carved spoon, you’ll also leave us with new found confidence and ability having mastered the use of the knife and axe, arguably the 2 most important tools available to us in bushcraft.
What will I do on a spoon carving course?
We’ll start the day by looking at a variety of carving techniques using knives and axes. Safety and being able to work with a minimum of effort will be the main focus of the session. You’ll also learn to identify which strokes are best suited for different kinds of cuts.
After this session you’ll be ready for a days spoon carving.
During your day with us, you’ll also learn about:
- Properties of different woods,
- Selecting your wood,
- Splitting techniques,
- Swedish spoon design,
- How to sharpen your carving tools.
Axes, carving knives, draw knives, scorps and crook knives will be provided.
A really great chance to begin a lifetime of carving beautiful things!

I have now attended quite a few courses ran buy the Jack Raven team and as always they all exceed my expectations, having carved 2 spoons and a butter spreader in past courses on various occasions I decided to attend a dedicated spoon carving course and it did not disappoint. I can highly recommend this 1 day craft course.
Nice day in the woods. Learned all about Spoon Theory (who knew there was so much to it!) Learned to use wood carving tool and hung out with a nice group of people. Weather played along to make it a perfect day.
Went on a spoon carving course. Was a really great day to spend outside. The knowledge and experience of the teachers was excellent. Came away with my very own hand carved spoon!
I had such a wonderful day last Sunday, the sun was shining and we were in the forest carving spoons. It was actually a much more mindful activity than I had previously considered. I'd never used and axe, or carving knife before or the other tools, but Gary explained it all and off we went. It was a very full day and I've created a lovely spoon! I thoroughly recommend this workshop.
One of the best days off I've had in ages! Gary and Nicola were incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable, not only about carving but a wide range of Bush craft and making skills. Set in a beautiful private woodland, the space was well set up and had everything needed for the day. Really excellent instructions and process, I think this is excellent value for money. Really recommend!
