1 Day Spoon Carving Course

spoon carving course | Kent | London | south east

What’s it about?

Based at our ancient woodland camp in Kent, our 1 day spoon carving course has been put together for anyone who’d like to understand how to use simple tools to create beautiful items from greenwood.

Whilst we’re certain that you’ll leave us with a great hand carved spoon, you’ll also leave us with new found confidence and ability having mastered the use of the knife and axe, arguably the 2 most important tools available to us in bushcraft.

What will I do on a spoon carving course?

We’ll start the day by looking at a variety of  carving techniques using  knives and axes.  Safety and being able to work with a minimum of effort will be the main focus of the session.  You’ll also learn to identify which strokes are best suited for different kinds of cuts.

After this session you’ll be ready for a days spoon carving.

During your day with us, you’ll also learn about:

  • Properties of different woods,
  • Selecting your wood,
  • Splitting techniques,
  • Swedish spoon design,
  • How to sharpen your carving tools.

Axes, carving knives, draw knives, scorps and crook knives will be provided.

A really great chance to begin a lifetime of carving beautiful things!

The one-day spoon carving course was our second Jack Raven experience, the first being seven years prior. I began with no confidence in my ability to use the tools but the instruction was clear so I made my best effort and was delighted with the results. We *will* be back. Sooner rather than later. I feel the pull of the axe course! Thank you Jack Raven, for a very memorable day.

Spoon carving day.

An excellent day, well structured with clear instruction followed by putting into practice with plenty of help from the friendly, knowledgeable team when needed. A wonderful setting in woodlands. Thoroughly enjoyable and relaxing day. This is my second craft day with Jack Raven, which have been consistently very good.

We did a spoon carving course today. Stunning setting, friendly instructors who monitor you unintrusively and provide guidance to help you create a spoon that's looks like a spoon, rather than a club! we came home not only with 2 spoons but also all our fingers fully attached! Thanks to all of you for a fantastic day.

We had an excellent day carving spoons in the woods. So much so, I’m already looking into a follow-up course on axes!
