What’s it about?
Based at our ancient woodland camp in Kent, our 1 day spoon carving course has been put together for anyone who’d like to understand how to use simple tools to create beautiful items from greenwood.
Whilst we’re certain that you’ll leave us with a great hand carved spoon, you’ll also leave us with new found confidence and ability having mastered the use of the knife and axe, arguably the 2 most important tools available to us in bushcraft.
What will I do on a spoon carving course?
We’ll start the day by looking at a variety of carving techniques using knives and axes. Safety and being able to work with a minimum of effort will be the main focus of the session. You’ll also learn to identify which strokes are best suited for different kinds of cuts.
After this session you’ll be ready for a days spoon carving.
During your day with us, you’ll also learn about:
- Properties of different woods,
- Selecting your wood,
- Splitting techniques,
- Swedish spoon design,
- How to sharpen your carving tools.
Axes, carving knives, draw knives, scorps and crook knives will be provided.
A really great chance to begin a lifetime of carving beautiful things!

We had an excellent day carving spoons in the woods. So much so, I’m already looking into a follow-up course on axes!

comfortable pace with easy going tuition
Thoroughly enjoyable day out
This was my second Jack Raven course and I am completely hooked. A relaxed and friendly atmosphere with loads of help at hand. Anyone wanting to do something a little bit different should go for it
Booked as a Birthday present for my eldest daughter, we thought we’d make a family day out of it. So glad we did, we had so much fun! Beautiful location, very, very friendly people, delicious food and good conversation. We even have a set of spoons (well, an approximation of spoons!), to show for it! Would not hesitate to recommend this course and we will be looking at the other courses available so we can come again in the not too distant future. Thank you very much to; Gary, Nicola, Bob and especially Willow the dog!
