What’s it about?

To meet a growing need in Outdoor Education, the Institute for Outdoor Learning is now providing a system of courses to equip those of you who are/aiming to use bushcraft skills as part of your programmes.

These full 3-day IOL Bushcraft Competency training courses have been created by the IOL Bushcraft Professional Practice Group using some of the most experienced trainers of bushcraft in the country. This is provided by individual training organisations; Jack Raven Bushcraft is proud to be one of them.

What will I do on this IOL Bushcraft Competency training course?

The syllabus meets the IOL Statement of Good Practice.  On this intensive 3 day course you will cover:

  • Safe use of basic bushcraft tools such as knives, folding saws and bow saws,
  • How to sharpen a bushcraft knife,
  • Making simple carved implements such as a tent peg or feather stick,
  • Safe shelter construction, including ‘A’ frame and ‘lean to’ debris shelters,
  • Importance of insulating yourself from the ground in a debris shelter by creating an improvised bed,
  • Establishing fires by: bow drill, fire steel, flint and steel, lenses, mirrors, chemicals, matches, fire pistons, lighters, batteries & wire wool,
  • Constructing and using a tinder bundle to light a fire,

Throughout the course we will provide advice and guidance on tools and equipment and how to teach the skills covered to other people, whether that be individuals or groups, all based on our own years of experience.

Best 3 days of my year! Oh, and I learned loads 😉

This 3-day Institute of Outdoor Learning Bushcraft course lead by Gary, and supported by Steve and Nicola, was brilliant! I really wasn't sure what to expect: my children had previously raved about a bushcraft birthday party that they'd been invited to at Jack Raven Bushcraft, so I was pretty sure I'd enjoy it. Well, it was the most enjoyable 3 days of my year! And I learned so much! I'm Canadian and had a rich outdoors education where I grew up, in and around the Rockies. However, over this 3 day course, I learned better and more efficient ways of doing pretty much everything, including building fires, finding due north, and making shelters.

Gary is a highly skilled instructor with a wealth of experience. He made all participants (with a whole range of skill levels) feel valued and competent, even with the trickier task of creating an ember with a bow drill. He kept the whole group engaged throughout.

I learned copious amounts and enjoyed the comradery. Now to decide which Jack Raven bushcraft classes to book next...

Fantastic course

This course was superb and great fun. Over the three days I was able to recap on previous information yet I took away so much more. Gary, Nicola, Steve and Willow were all so welcoming and supportive throughout. A well organised course full of encouragement, fun and laughter - you wont notice how quickly the time passes by! Thank you for a great and inspirational course! I would highly recommend you to others.

So much fun!!

The course was amazing and taught in a really fun and practical way. Gary was very knowledgeable and we all learnt a lot from him. Some of the skills were challenging especially the “Bow Drilling”, but Gary was great at teaching the skills and I managed to master it. The site is well organised and set in a beautiful part of the countryside. If you have a love for the outdoors and Bushcraft then this is the course for you!! I would thoroughly recommend it!! Thank you Gary, Nicola and Willow for a great experience!! 😊😊
