Making some bow staves

Yesterday saw Nicola and I making some bow staves for our 3 Day Bow Making Course.  We selected a sycamore about 25cm or so in diameter and felled it.

We then cut 2 logs a little under 2m in length and, using a couple of axes, split them into 4 sections.

We then peeled off the bark using a spud (not a potato but a bit like a wooden chisel).

These staves will sit in our workshop now to season off for a few months before being trimmed down a little over the winter.

Although making some bow staves isn’t part of our 3 Day Bow Making Course, we do talk about it’s done.

You can see plenty of photos from this course, as well as all of our others, on our Facebook page.
