Pole Lathing Course

What will I do on this pole lathing course?

We’ll start the course by showing you how to safely use an axe. We’ll look at selecting your wood, splitting techniques and a variety of methods to cross cut the wood for the raw materials.

  • You’ll be shown how to cleft greenwood and use an axe, draw knife and a shave horse to shape the wood.
  • You’ll then get to use a traditional woodland pole lathe where students have turned dibblers, rolling pins, spurtles, honey drizzlers, chair legs and even potato mashers!!

All of the materials you use are sustainably sourced from our own woodland in line with our management plan.

Turning tools, froes, draw knives, a selection of axes are all provided.

You can see our complete course schedule here.

Steve was excellent and a thorough teacher, teaching us about several aspects of woodworking, not limited to lathing but beyond. The product I got to bring home reflected what I had learnt and will be a great keepsake.

Great day learning pole lathing. The instructor Steve was very knowledgeable and a generally nice person. I came away tired and with a new skill.
