What’s it about?
Our primitive fire lighting course is the perfect course for anyone looking to develop their fire lighting skills as well as their skills in spotting useful tinders and potential fire lighting resources from the environment around them.
Fire lighting played an important role in human development due to the way that it transformed survival, nutrition, safety, and social development.
Fire lighting allowed our species to cook food, it provided us with warmth, protected us from predators, gave us light after dark, allowed us to manage the land and resources and of course provided a focal point, somewhere that we could sit together and share knowledge, tells stories and bond.
What will I do on this primitive fire lighting course?
During this one day course, led by Billy Souter, you’ll experience a range of primitive fire lighting techniques that have been utilised by our hunter gatherer ancestors throughout the ages.
You will:
- Use flint and marcasite (a mineral of similar composition to pyrites) to produce sparks,
- Learn how to make and use a hand drill,
- Have a go at a group bow drill,
- Learn about different fungi that can be used in primitive fire lighting,
- Make amadou from hoof fungus,
- Char birch polypores.
You’ll be taken on a walk through our ancient woodland on a quest to source natural tinders that can be used in primitive fire lighting as well as being shown a number of fire lays and their application.
You could make a weekend of it and book onto our Flint Knapping course too!
