What’s it about?
Based at our ancient woodland camp in Kent, our 1 day spoon carving course has been put together for anyone who’d like to understand how to use simple tools to create beautiful items from greenwood.
Whilst we’re certain that you’ll leave us with a great hand carved spoon, you’ll also leave us with new found confidence and ability having mastered the use of the knife and axe, arguably the 2 most important tools available to us in bushcraft.
What will I do on a spoon carving course?
We’ll start the day by looking at a variety of carving techniques using knives and axes. Safety and being able to work with a minimum of effort will be the main focus of the session. You’ll also learn to identify which strokes are best suited for different kinds of cuts.
After this session you’ll be ready for a days spoon carving.
During your day with us, you’ll also learn about:
- Properties of different woods,
- Selecting your wood,
- Splitting techniques,
- Swedish spoon design,
- How to sharpen your carving tools.
Axes, carving knives, draw knives, scorps and crook knives will be provided.
A really great chance to begin a lifetime of carving beautiful things!
You can see all of our course dates here.

The atmosphere is immediately welcoming stepping in the camp under the tree canopy and amongst the hand made wooden structures and furniture.
I went to a spoon whittling day course. It was just wonderful.
Gary and Nicola are excellent and attentive teachers. This was my first ever attempt and I came away with a spoon!! It was a present to do it with my husband and that was just a lovely experience to share. Great bunch of people, too - a fantastic day out and I'll be back for more courses.
Only thing to mention is that they advise to dress warm, it's good to heed that advice. I am glad I did as even though it was a warm day it gets cold in the woodland. 🙂
Absolutely amazing day, time flew by. Will certainly do again 😀
I have now attended quite a few courses ran buy the Jack Raven team and as always they all exceed my expectations, having carved 2 spoons and a butter spreader in past courses on various occasions I decided to attend a dedicated spoon carving course and it did not disappoint. I can highly recommend this 1 day craft course.
Nice day in the woods. Learned all about Spoon Theory (who knew there was so much to it!) Learned to use wood carving tool and hung out with a nice group of people. Weather played along to make it a perfect day.
Went on a spoon carving course. Was a really great day to spend outside. The knowledge and experience of the teachers was excellent. Came away with my very own hand carved spoon!
