Woodland management weekend January 2020

We are immensely fortunate to have so many wonderful people give their time to help us out in the woods over the winter.  This is when we have the time to do a little woodland management; in previous years we’ve coppiced the hazel, as well as sweet chestnut, and opened out the main rides.

This year unfortunately we’ve had to deal with ash that have been afflicted by ash die back.  I sadly suspect that over the next few years we will lose most of the ash in the woods.  I would like to leave them to rot back into the ground where ever possible but any diseased trees in and around the main camp had to come down.  Which we did last weekend.

I took a few photos last Saturday of everyone hard at work.  Most of the trees were relatively straightforward to fell such as the one below that Tim dropped.

A couple were more difficult and needed to be felled from the top down and fortunately Lawrence was on hand to climb up and do this for us.

He had time to take a quick photo while he was at it!  I really like this photo, it’s a great view of the camp.

Many thanks to everyone who so kindly gave up their time to help us out, sorry if I didn’t get a photo of you this time around!

We’re unlikely to be felling any more trees this winter but we have a few camp maintenance jobs to do on Sunday 2nd February as well as 22nd & 23rd February; get in touch if you’d like to join us.
