1 Day Leather Working Course

leather working | Kent | south east | London

What’s it about?

Based at our ancient woodland camp in Kent, we’ve put this leather working day together for anyone with an interest in craft, the outdoors, or who simply wants to explore another avenue of bushcraft.  So if you’re looking for an unforgettable day, join our experienced craftsman, Paul Bradley, in a leather working day that focuses on leather work tools, design and construction.

What will I do?

Typically, you will, under guidance and instruction:

  • Learn all about the different tools used in leather working and how to use them,
  • How to design and draw out your items,
  • Then how to cut out and assemble them.

This is an opportunity to produce simple items such as sheaths and ‘possibles’ pouches and take these away with you when you leave.  So if you have a knife, multitool, axe or even a torch or mobile phone you’d like to make a leather sheath for, bring it with you!  Otherwise we’ll have plenty of help and advice to help you chose what to make.

All tools, equipment and materials are provided but please note, there’ll be a small charge for the leather that you use.

A really great chance to begin a lifetime of making beautiful things!

Great course!

A most enjoyable course. Really good tuiton. It was great to be able to take something away with me that I made myself and can use as well as some know-how for trying future projects. Thank you!

Hi I would like to thank you all for a wonderful weekend, it was a great learning curve and I got a lot out of my time with you. I would like to recommend your courses to any body wishing to go on one. I will be happy if I can do another one in the future.

Excellent! Well organised day and very friendly atmosphere. I left at the end of the day with a new love for leatherworking/crafting. I would definitely recommend this course.

A 'full house' of eager 'craftsfolk-in-the-making' assembled with varying novice skill sets at the excellent woodland venue. We all had different items to cover or protect which created a challenge for the engaging tuition of, and ever-patient, Paul Bradley (Bardster). Paul made sure that everyone had his help when needed once we got going and we all created an item of leather to take home that we could be pleased with - even me ;-). More importantly, it gave us the encouragement to carry on and create without having to be under Bardster's watchful eye.
You can accumulate a lot of fascinating looking leather working tools but Paul explained that you really should concentrate on the basics - leather (obviously!), sharp knife, needles, thread.....and a cutting mat, etc , to begin with. An idea of the design you want, and an imagination, is a definite bonus!
Pausing for the excellent lunch, we set about stitching feverishly in the afternoon and apart from the odd bent needle and sore finger there was not a drop of blood to be seen (well, not much anyway).
As is the norm with Jack Raven Bushcraft courses, the day end came too soon and I'm looking forward to trying my hand at another leather creation as well as another course soon.
Thanks again to Paul, Nicola, Gary....... and Willow for a great day!
