What’s it about?
Our 1:1 bushcraft training is for anyone who’d like to develop their bushcraft skillset, whether you’re a complete novice or have more experience.
As the day is governed by your learning objectives, we can move at a pace set by you and not a timetable. We find that 1:1 bushcraft training changes the teacher centric dynamic and gives you a much greater role in the direction the learning takes.
What will I do on a 1:1 bushcraft training day?
Ideally we’ll have a chat before you come along so that we can get a good idea of where you’re at with your bushcraft and where you want to go with it. From there we can work out where to focus our attention on the day.
We’ll try our absolute best to help you in any areas you wish to focus on. If we can’t help you, we’ll say so and do our best to recommend someone who can. A few examples of 1:1 training we’ve undertaken:
- Fire lighting,
- Learning or perfecting technique for fire by friction,
- Tracking and identification of animal sign,
- Natural cordage,
- Tree and plant identification and uses,
- Becoming competent with an axe,
- Herbal remedies,
- Private tuition for the IOL Bushcraft Competency Certificate.
We are also able to offer 1:2 training, there is an additional cost of £80 for this.

I had an amazing time on my private tuition with Jack Raven. The instructor was extremely patient, knowledgable and amazing conversation. I will certainly be returning for another session!
My brother and I had a 2 day private course with Gary. Before the course, Gary got in touch to find out more about my experience and motivations so that he could tailor the course content, which was much appreciated.
During the course itself, Gary was great at explaining/demonstrating the various skills, patient in helping us practice them and also answered all manner of questions we threw his way.
The site itself is great. Nestled in some amazing woodlands, it has everything you need, including a cosy tent with a wood fire.
We did the course over the last weekend of February so it was cold and wet at times, but I'm glad we got to practice the skills in those conditions rather than perfect ones.
I would wholeheartedly recommend the course to anyone interested in learning more abouts bushcraft or just the outdoors in general.
Thanks Gary!
Had a great day in the woods learning fire lighting methods and a little about knife sharpening and carving. Gary is a knowledgeable, clear, calm and patient teacher. Would love to come back for more learning.
An absolute privilege to be able to tap into Gary's immense knowledge and passion for bushcraft and the natural world. My day focused on firelighting, from the absolute basics, tools, raw materials, theory, and knowledge, to hands-on techniques. Gary has a comforting, encouraging, and patient manner that helps absorb the flood of knowledge he is more than happy to share. A fantastic day refreshing old and learning new skills.
Spending the day in the woodlands with Gary was such a great thing to do. Aside from being in such a lovely area and spending the day outside, I am now much more comfortable with firebuilding and foraging. Firebuilding went beyond what I expected and I left with an even greater sense of how so much of our needs can be found naturally. Will enjoy coming back to learn more bushcraft.
