How to use a shadow stick

A shadow stick is a fantastic technique to find direction using the sun.  All you need is a stick and the sun and you’re good to go.  In this 4 minute video Gary demonstrates how to use a shadow stick to determine the points of the compass.  And Willow has a lay down as it was very hot..

Also in the video is a description of the major weakness of shadow sticks, that the sun only rises due east twice a year!

We teach how to use a shadow stick, as well as other methods of natural navigation such as sun and watch, on many of our bushcraft courses. You can see photos of previous participants on our website here, and many, many more on our Facebook page.
