Comfrey oil

We’ve written about comfrey in the past but this time we’re focusing on how to make comfrey oil.  We’ve picked enough leaves for a couple of jars so far, but as comfrey is an early plant to come through we’ll be able to get many more prepared this spring.

  • Pick the comfrey leaves on a sunny day and lay them out on some kitchen roll to dry out for a few days.

  • Pack the leaves into a clean jar and fill with olive oil.
  • Push the leaves down to make sure that all of the leaves are beneath the surface of the oil.  Any leaf above the surface will turn and spoil the oil.

  • Cover the jar with a cloth top and leave it to infuse on a sunny window sill.

  • Check the jar regularly to make sure that none of the leaves are above the oil.
  • Leave the jar for about a month or so before straining the oil and pouring it into a clean jar.

It’s now ready to be used to make ointments and balms., it’s similar to this recipe for St John’s Wort ointment. We make these on our Herbal Remedies course. You can see photos from previous courses on our Facebook page.
