After a short break over Christmas and New Year I’ve decided to carry on with the tree theme from the previous 2 posts and take a look at some of the bushcraft uses for western red cedar (Thuja plicata). I don’t often discuss non-native species, or conifers (although I did write this post about conifers a few years ago), but western red cedar is common enough, and useful enough, to warrant a mention.
We take a walk around our woodland looking at trees and their uses, including the bushcraft uses for western red cedar, on many of our courses, such as our 5 Day Bushcraft Courses. We look at its use as a tinder on our IOL Bushcraft Competency Course.

Looking through much of your posts and there is a ton of material here. I like that you have decided to do training like videos , easy to understand and they seem so far to always get right to the point. Great job.
Thanks James. I try to focus on simple, repeatable skills and knowledge, bushcraft is about knowledge and not kit!
That’s very true. Skill is much more important than kit. So many people doing blogs, vlogs, and YouTube vids on the gear not enough on the crafts. (Myself included) lol. However I think it’s not so much about actual survival these days then about going to have a good time in the outdoors, and in my personal opinion that’s where the information on kit itself comes into play. However that said I personally just love going out to try some new skills and use some of my gear and be out in nature. I just wish I had more time to do it lol.
