Nordic Crafts Weekend

Nordic crafts | Viking knife | Kent | South east

What’s it about?

We’ve designed this Nordic Crafts weekend with Kaos Blacksmiths to give a sound introduction to anyone interested in working with metal and green wood, all based in a stunning outdoor setting at our ancient woodland camp in Kent.

We don’t believe that you can learn both of these fantastic skills in a single course anywhere else.

What will I do on a Nordic Crafts weekend?

We’ve combined two traditional craft skills for this unique weekend – metal working and greenwood working. You will be shown, and given the opportunity, to make a Viking style knife and carve a Swedish spoon from greenwood.

Day 1 will be spent learning the ancient art of the blacksmith:

  • We will show you how to use an iron age pit forge, where you will make your very own Viking knife.
  • You’ll be shown, and given time, to make a sheath for your knife.

Day 2 will involve carving with axes and knives:

  • We’ll teach you a variety of Swedish axe and knife carving techniques.
  • You will also learn to identify which strokes are best suited to different kinds of cuts.
  • You’ll then make your own Swedish style spoon from greenwood.

There might even be some Scandinavian dishes on the menu.  A lot packed into this Nordic crafts weekend, but if there is any spare time we’ll throw in some bushcraft as well!

Awesome weekend

I have attended this course perhaps 5 times and each has been memorable. Ross, the blacksmith, definitely is unforgettable as is Gary, our trusty leader.
Nicola and Gary, as always, provided excellent food.

11/10 great experience

Gary and Nicola, gave a great welcome into their well planned and laid out camp with a warm fire and great energy. It’s a great experience for all ages capability levels. All the guests on the course made the course a really nice time. The food was spot on. And the coffee and tea provided was more than adequate.
I would personally recommend to all you won’t be disappointed.

Thanks very much.

Nordic craft weekend

I attended the Nordic craft weekend in August this year (2020) We were met by Gary Nicola and last but not least Willow upon arrival in the carpark .

The walk up to the camp was pleasant and kinda set the tone for the whole weekend. Once we got there Gary was waiting with the luggage and he was strangely not out of breath at all having driven all the way up to the wood.

We were shown where to camp and left to it ...then came dinner which was freshly made soup and it was amazing. The camp initiation was just right including how to use the loo. Then a blissful night listening to the nightlife.

Morning brought brekkie and on both mornings it was delicious and more than adequate

First day was forging a neck knife...what an amazing experience so informative and a good laugh and I actually enjoyed the heat and the fire fairies.

Dinner was Swedish meatballs with mash apple and beetroot salad and the best gravy. Gary you are a lucky man if Nicola cooks like this at home.

We had a nice but far to short wander in the woods with Gary and he was incredibly informative and I learned a lot in a short time. To cut a long story short ....I could go on and on about how great it was to spend time with Jack Raven Bushcraft but I won't and I will conclude by saying a few more words ......TRY IT YOURSELF you won't regret it.

Another winner

I have been "bushcrafting" with Gary, Nichola and Ross at least once a year for the past 8 years, - and I live in Dorset! Gary is a brilliant and knowedgeable instructor, Nichola is great cook and herbalist and Ross is an awesome blacksmith and all are now friends. This Nordic Weekend is great fun and we each ended up with a wooden spoon, a handmade knife and a leather sheath for it.
The course was full with 8 students, Vicky, Toby, Alister, Red, Tony, Mark, Paul and me which makes for a relaxed but productive course. I am really looking forward to my next one.
