Fallow deer and badger hair

On our Tracking & Nature Awareness course we look at all kinds of sign with our students, including prints, scat, feeding sign and various discard such as hair.  In this blog post I said that we had some very knowledgeable people on our last course.  Well one of them works for National Museum Wales and was able to take the photos below.

As we were walking on Sunday we came across several trails from fields into the woodland and so we looked on the fences for hair.  We found badger hair and deer hair.  One way to tell them apart is to see if the hair will roll between your finger and thumb, badger hair won’t roll.

And you can see why in the photo, the badger hair is almost square in cross section.  Cheers Jim!
