What’s it about?
We’ve designed this Nordic crafts weekend with Kaos Blacksmiths to give a sound introduction to anyone interested in working with metal and green wood, all based in a stunning outdoor setting at our ancient woodland camp in Kent.
We don’t believe that you can learn both of these fantastic skills in a single course anywhere else.
What will I do?
We’ve combined two traditional craft skills for this unique weekend – metal working and greenwood working. You will be shown, and given the opportunity, to make a Viking style knife and carve a Swedish spoon from greenwood.
Day 1 will be spent learning the ancient art of the blacksmith:
We will show you how to use an iron age pit forge, where you will make your very own Viking knife.
You’ll be shown, and given time, to make a sheath for your knife.
Day 2 will involve carving with axes and knives:
We’ll teach you a variety of Swedish axe and knife carving techniques.
You will also learn to identify which strokes are best suited to different kinds of cuts.
- You’ll then make your own Swedish style spoon from greenwood.
There might even be some Scandinavian dishes on the menu. A lot packed into this Nordic themed craft weekend, but if there is any spare time we’ll throw in some bushcraft as well!

We had a wonderful time, camping in the woods turned out to be warm and cozy! The sunrise and sunset were beautiful through the trees.
Nicola prepared some wonderful food for us, so breakfast, lunch and dinner, all delicious and plentiful, within the nordic theme and everyone enjoyed eating and talking together. The constant kettle over the fire ensured tea and coffee at any pausing point, with the odd biscuit for refuelling during the hammering and chopping!
We learnt so many skills that we can now use these to continue making at home. The knife forging was terrific, using the charcoal to heat the steel and manipulate it reasonably easily, with expert tuition.
The axe skills were amazing. It is truly astonishing how detailed the axe work can be! With the right techniques the axe and then carving knife can shape the wood with accuracy.
Fantastic educational weekend with a great company.
The Nordic Crafts Weekend was great! Despite not having and experience in woodwork or blacksmithing I thoroughly enjoyed the weekend, and was really proud of what I came back with! Gary and Ross were knowledgeable and engaging, and Nicola's food was superb. The campsite is in a beautiful setting too.
I had a relaxing weekend in the woods getting away from the hectic everyday world. The surroundings are amazing and Nicola's Scandinavian inspired food was beautifully presented and tasted fantastic. Nicola, Gary and Ross are great teachers and I managed to make a cool little steel knife and a basic wooden spoon and butter spreader.
Great fun. Really enjoyed the course and the company.
Learnt lots and not just from Gary and Ross. Food was excellent.
The views on the way up to the site were terrific. Also good on the way down.
A highly recommended experience.
